2008 MINNESOTA LAND ROVER CLUB EVENT DESCRIPTIONS
Four wheeling provides the opportunity to get off the pavement, in to nature and build friendships and family traditions. We host a variety of events ranging from novice level green-laning to challenging local and long distance 4WD adventures that will test your strategy, stamina and skill. August of 2008 will mark our first hosting of a national event - the Mishupishu North Lakes Rallye!
Additionally, we organize road trips to other national Land Rover rallies, a geo-cache competition, fall leaf tours, guided weekend fly-fishing and sport shooting retreats, an annual picnic with family camping (a 20+ year tradition!), ice driving challenges, car shows, drive-in movie dates and more! All of our trail events are on dedicated private land or state land that is authorized for off road motor sport recreation. We DO NOT condone off trail riding, trespassing on state closed trails or destruction of natural resources.
Here are just some of the 2008 MNLR recreational off-roading and social events:
FEBRUARY
Backus Weekend at the Keiffer Compound: Feb. 1-3, 2008
This will be the second annual weekend that Mr. Keiffer has graciously opened up his family cabin to the Club. With the snow cover, there will be adventurous wheeling right outside the front door. Please contact
Tony Kieffer or
Gustaf Kupetz for more information.
Annual Ice Event: Feb. 21, 2008
This will be the 10th annual MNLR Ice Event on Big Fish Lake in Maple Grove, Minnesota. This is a winter and ice driving competition on a designed course with a traveling trophy awarded to the champion. Over the years we've experienced the gamut from shirt-sleeve conditions to sub-zero ice storms, keeping the competition lively and ever-changing. This event is open to guests and non-Rovers may run the course, but only Rover driving members can win the trophy. As always, thank you to Expedition Autoworks for hosting the pavilion and giving us a place to warm up as well as Jim and his team for continually surveying the ice depth and designing the course. A plentiful potluck lunch, sledding, ice skating, indoor fireplace for warming up, backgammon championship, kids, dogs and good friends round out a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon.
APRIL
Sport Shooting at the Minnesota Horse and Hunt Club: April 12-13, 2008
Land Rovers and guns - does it get any better? Spend the afternoon with the MNLR Club as we learn from the masters. Guided instruction on the range will be followed by a wonderful luncheon in the lodge and open shooting in the afternoon. For those who would like to extend the day, overnight lodging in the on-site cabins and a communal dinner will be enjoyed by all. Reservations are required. Thank you to Mike for planning this unique event and to the MN Horse and Hunt club.
MAY
Weekend at Pa Rockers: May 16-18, 2008

For those hearty souls, there is always Mt. Baldy to conquer. Camping for tents (limited hook ups also available) is located on site and an rsvp will be necessary. Costs will be approximately $60 per truck, and should include camping. See
www.parocker.com for more information on the location. Contact
Charlie Malachek for event information.

We'll start the 2 hour caravan from Hudson, Wisconsin after work on Friday and be home in time for portabellas on the grill with Dad on Sunday. Camping is primitive, but the dedicated Dr. Rik always brings along his porta-potty, martini shaker and sense of humor. Thank you to Dr. Rik for organizing this event. Contact
Dr. Rik Olsen for event information.

Annual Picnic and Family Camping: August 8-10, 2008

Sherwood Forest Campground. Wheeling will be at the
Gilbert Off Road Vehicle Recreation Area, featuring over 30 miles of dedicated recreational trails for use by motorized vehicles. The weekend will include family camping for tents and RVs, a traditional group dinner on Friday night, novice and advanced level day rides, nightly campfires, a potluck dinner on Saturday night, dedication of the coveted "Broken Axle" award, a raffle for great prizes and fun for all.
SEPTEMBER
Land Rover National Rally: September 16-20, 2008
This event is hosted by the Solihull Society of Denver, Colorado and will take place in gorgeous Moab, Utah. The National Land Rover Rally draws hundreds of participants from around the country. It is well organized and regularly gets national media attention including a LRM cover shot in Nov. 2005 of Jay's "Yellow Beast" Defender and interior photos of Charlie's Series, Rik's Meander, Ned's Disco, and Paav doing some expert spotting/winching. Registration can be made online. See
Land Rover National Rally for more information. Thank you to Dr. Rik for hosting a MNLR showing at this event.
OCTOBER
16th Annual Mid-Atlantic Rally: October 2-5, 2008
Join us for a road trip to the
Oak Ridge Estate, Arrington, Virginia for the largest Rover event in North America hosted by a single club,
the Rover Owners Association of Virginia. This event has been very wet in years past so plan accordingly. 2008 will be the 4th year we have attended and this rally is open to guests. Registration with ROAV is required.
Fall Leaf Run: October 19, 2008
Let's get out of town and really experience those fabulous fall colors. This road tour will originate in the Twin Cities and will likely include some gentle green laning before we reach our destination for dinner. We may try to turn this into a charitable fundraiser. This event will be open to guests and an rsvp will be necessary. Thank you to
Fred Baer for mapping this ride and organizing the event.
Annual Family Day at Minnetonka Orchards: Date TBA
Where kids can be kids, and apples can be pies. 2008 will mark the 5th year for this family friendly day. Pray for good weather and join us at Minnetonka Orchards, a family-owned apple farm located in beautiful Minnestrista, Minnesota. There are apples, pony rides, pygmie goats, a corn maze, a mammoth hay pile (in case your allergies need a workout), a pumpkin patch, giant sand box, hay rides, live music and the best apple doughnuts you can find anywhere. We frequently secure a Land Rover only parking area. See the farm at:
www.minnetonkaorchards.com.This event is open to guests.
Adopt-A-River: Date TBA
Get off the beaten path - really. Canoe down the MNLR designated 8 mile section of Minnehaha Creek collecting trash and old tires to keep our waterways clean and clear. This is a working event and you will get very dirty, so plan accordingly. Thank you to
Expedition Autoworks for accepting the trash and tires for disposal. This event is open to guests. Thank you,
Pad Hyne for organizing this important community service project with the Minnesota DNR.
NOVEMBER
Last Trail Ride of the Season: Date TBA
Oh, the end of the season brings such sorrow. Luckily, we have social events right through the winter, so this doesn't have to be a long goodbye. The last ride of the season is planned for the hardy only as we usually encounter snow and ice on the trail. This can prove to be challenging and fun but not for the faint at heart. Vehicle damage and a few late night recovery hours spent on the trail have been legendary. Hoteling it makes it do-able for those wives who detest camping and the kids always like getting rowdy at the pool. This event is for Land Rovers only and is open to guests. More information to come as it becomes available.
DECEMBER
Annual Holiday Party: Date TBA
Time to get holly and jolly at the 11th Annual Holiday Party. Unlike most other MNLR scheduled events, this soiree is kid-free. Fabulous food, even more fabulous friends, a traditional gag gift raffle and good times are guaranteed. In 2006, we saluted Austin with El Patron -- and were stupid enough to allow it to be photographed. Need I say more? Cost is $25 per person and dinner is included. There is a limit of one guest per member.
Toys for Tots: Date TBA
In the past, we donated time to organize and wrap gifts for this program, but 2007 we turned it into an annual event to collect environmentally educational toys and deliver them to the site sponsored by Kare 11 News and the US Marine Corps. After filling our vehicles with the toys (of which we are hoping to secure an abundance), we will parade down to Kare 11 for the delivery and TV appearance. Cocktails and dinner will likely follow. This event is open to guests.
